With all this talk of stories, we wanted to quickly share our own. Campfyre is an idea that was long thought of but only recently put into action. My sister and I used to make up
stories together. Lots of 'em--on car rides, family vacations, during those nights when our parents would leave us alone in a field (just kidding, Child Protective Services!). Later, when
she had kids, she passed on her good looks to my niece and nephew while I passed on an innate ability to make stuff up, and we would concoct wild tales together.
For entertainment while gorging ourselves on ice cream chipwiches from Insomnia Cookies (actual chipwich pictured above), my friends and I would play a game that has no name, but which we eventually
called "The Word Game." The rules were simple. One person would begin a sentence with a single word and then the next person in the circle would add to it, with turns passing quickly from
one to the next. The rule was that each person had to say the first word that came to mind to keep the story moving. Sometimes, you had to suck it up and play a preposition like "to" or
"of" for your turn, if that's what made sense in the context of the story. Others would try to hard by inserting a word like "tyrannasaurs" into a story that had been, up until that point at
least, about a rural Mongolian family, evincing a collective groan from the rest of the group. But no matter what, the principle was the same--each player was but one small part of a collective
experiment in storytelling that could go in any direction. Characters were dragged through the mud, killed off, resurrected. Plot twists abounded and shocked even those who crafted them.
And most of all, the whole thing was most memorable for being an S-load of fun, laughs, and surprises.
That sense of adventure and possibility is the reason Campfyre exists. That sense of wonderment shouldn't be consigned to sepia-toned memories of when we were kids. Technology is an amazing thing, and if we can use it to connect with old friends and new by sharing in the wit, intrigue, humor, and fantasy of storytelling, then it will have truly proved itself useful for something other than videos of cats playing the piano.
That's our story. Now start yours.
We hope you enjoy it.
